the debate was held and where this morning the hometown paper scores it round one, romney. the left-leaning slate.com's john dickerson calling it the best moment of mitt romney's campaign. obama supporter andrew sullivan calls it the president's worst public performance bar none of his campaign. ? and what we found in the debate was that mitt romney kind of walked away from a lot of the policies he had been talking about, so president obama i think didn't have the opportunity he should have had to compare their plans because every time he talked about what was in the romney plan, romney said oh, no, no, no, that's not in my plan when it of course had been for the last six months. next time we're going to have to go back at that a little bit. and the second point was that when we look at -- at america today, you know, we're not in a -- in a state -- yes, everybody's got the economy as their number one issue, but people don't live in that kind of binary world. when an immigrant family is worried about whether their children are going to be deported, they can't study as hard at school. when a woman -- when a mom is worried about, you know, paying for her reproductive health, you know, that adds an extra burden to her economic struggles. when a gay and lexan family doesn't have benefits or isn't recognized, you know, the workplace and where they choose to work becomes a much bigger stru

, when he was attacking romney in the middle section of the debate over his budget, medicare and tax plans. other than that, i don't think people would come away with much of an idea of what president obama would give them if they give him another four years. >> romney, they say, will ultimately rise in the polls because of his debate perfo performance. for that small number of voters that haven't made up their minds, has this helped romney? >> very difficult past few weeks, if last night went well for the president you kind of have a hardening of the belief that the race is virtually sealed, out of reach. the debate has ended that discussion and it's going to remind us, move into the conversation, a reminder that the president faces in this debate. mitt romney did had himself some good with those undecided voters and just as importantly energized the he republican base. there's a sense of retooling in the obama campaign, look, incoming presidents often have problems in their first debate. people don't talk to you like that in the oval office. no question the president needs a reset.

and counting until the presidential debate tonight. mitt romney, he is gaining in two swing states. could this be romney's springboard? romney has whittled the president's lead, take a look. he's whittled the president's lead in the two percentage points in virginia. this is according to a poll released today by marist college, the wall street journal and also nbc news. two-point lead for obama, that's down five points last month. keep in mind we're talking virginia, that's 13 electoral votes there. and check it out, similar story for you in florida. 29 electoral votes there. now, a one-point, one-point lead for obama, down from four points in september. we should mention here that poll shows the president still with the seven-point lead in ohio. we can't forget about ohio. but speaking nationwide here, the president's lead, in our cnn poll of polls, you can see it here, stands at 3 percentage points, unchanged. as we noticed today, kind of interesting, the president has gained one point and romney dropped one point. this is the gallup national tracking poll. obama with a six-point lead t

analyst gloria borger, she's joining us. it's clear that that debate has really, really helped mitt romney. >> yeah, i don't think the romney campaign could have wanted to do any more with this debate than they did. if you look across the board at these numbers, wolf, romney has made gains in almost every area including somebody who's better able to improve the jobs situation. he leads -- romney leads obama by eight points on that. so whether it's on the economy, whether it's on leadership, he's now tied with the president. as far as leadership ability is concerned. so i think romney got everything out of that debate and more. >> he certainly did. and if you take a look at -- let me put the numbers back on the screen one more time. earlier this month before the debate, romney was behind the president, the president, 51%, romney, 43%. eight-point difference. now 49% for romney, 45% for obama, a four-point spread. that's a 12-point spread in only, what, three weeks, shall we say? and clearly the major development was his strong performs at that debate. >> you know, wolf, it just shows you th

president obama did not have a good night in that debate. that what everything mitt romney could have wanted to get out of that debate, he got out of this debate and if he has gotten his potential supporters more enthusiastic about going out to the polls and that's what this reflects, that's very good for mitt romney. >> there is a difference in the wording. he's leading over, romney's leading overall in this survey among the likely voters. gallup also out today though with a poll among registered voters and that's different. that has a poll where we see obama leading by five points, so walk me through it. is there such a big difference, when i get that phone call, i'm probably hearing my kid screaming in the background, so i won't hear the difference. what is the difference? >> i love that we're getting the -- on polling now. a couple of things. each polling sort of public polling has their own art and science to likely voting and it is pretty much an art as it is a science a. lot of people had the art wrong going into the late primaries. that's why you saw early polls in the primaries bein
